Federer reaches 11th Wimbledon final

15 Julio 2017

In two hours and 56 minutes, Cilic beat Querrey 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 to set up a match with either tennis legend Roger Federer or Tomas Berdych. "Here I am again to support him".

After another dose of R&R in missing the claycourt season to better prepare for his favourite tournament, he has yet to drop a set this fortnight.

Three consecutive forehand winners gave a ruthless Federer control of the second set tiebreak as he moved two sets clear.

"I've got the pleasure to play on Centre Court another time". While one is set to achieve a record 19 Grand Slam and an eighth Wimbledon title, the other is eyeing his maiden Wimbledon crown.

No tie-break was needed in the third however, Federer breaking in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead and he never looked back, closing the match out at 6-4 to become the oldest man since Ken Rosewall in 1978. Berdych hung in with Federer set after set, but simply couldn't keep up when Federer broke. The more I play, the worse it gets. "I started tennis with my older brother Vinko when our father brought us to a tennis club".

A year ago, it would have been hard to imagine this resurgence from Federer.

For the Croatian, this Wimbledon could be historic, because if he wins, he will be the first player outside the Big Four (Andy Murray, Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Federer) to take the title since 2002.

He was 35 years old, coming off of knee surgery and planned to sit out the 2016 Rio Olympics and the U.S. Open after skipping the French Open.

If there is an upset, it will be down to Cilic being in the zone - a place he is known to occupy on occasion. The last time anyone outside of the fab four (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray) won the title was way back in 2002, when Australian Lleyton Hewitt won the Wimbledon. Cilic has lost 13 times in 2017, winning only one tournament (on clay in Istanbul). It would be a big ask for the Croatian to beat Federer in his own territory, but Cilic would not be feeling undue pressure over the big match.

The Swiss has delivered the coup de grace in the tenth game of this final act, signing a eighth victory in a row against his opponent.

6/7 - Federer and Cilic have met seven times previously, with Federer winning six of those matches. "We had a brutal quarter-final last year here (when Federer came from two sets down to win) and he crushed me at the US Open in 2014". He has everything working for him at the moment.
