Garbine Muguruza Defeats Venus Williams in Wimbledon Final

15 Julio 2017

"I had the hardest match today against Venus", she said. She's such an incredible player.

"I tried my best to the same things as you, but I think there will other opportunities".

Three double-faults in one loose game had Williams under pressure and down break points at 3-3, but the veteran also averted strife with some big serving.

Accepting the trophy, Muguruza unwittingly drew attention to the 14-year age gap between the two players.

However, losing to the younger Williams sister, Serena, in the final two years ago clearly helped Muguruza, who said that experience helped her remain calm, a resolve that showed practically all tournament. But Muguruza fought those off and did not drop a game the rest of the way.

Since Venus won the first of her five Wimbledon titles in 2000, she and her sister have dominated the Championships.

In Tennis, Venus Williams is in the 10th position and Garbine Muguruzu is the 14th position.

Williams returned to the top 10 last year and reached her first Grand Slam final since 2009 when she lost to Serena in Melbourne earlier this year. He came back fit and refreshed and won the Australian Open in January for his record-extending 18th Grand Slam title and first anywhere in 4½ years.

The Venezuela-born 23-year-old Muguruza sealed the deal after a successful Hawkeye challenge of a Williams forehand that sailed just beyond the baseline.

Throughout the entire second set, Muguruza dismantled Williams, taking the set 6-0 through a combination of an impressive deep game and exploitation of numerous mistakes by Williams. It is her second Grand Slam win. "I believe I can do that".

The 23 year year-old stopped the remarkable run of 37 year-old Venus Williams by winning the first women's final of Wimbledon. "Like I said before, I always look at the wall and see all the names and all the history". Join The Roar for live scores and a blog from 11pm AEST. There may be a new guard heading women's tennis soon, and Muguruza has what it takes to be right up there with them for the foreseeable future. On the first set point, a 20-stroke exchange ended when Williams blinked first, putting a forehand into the net. The fight won't happen for about another month and a half, but it's never too soon to share the hate.
